In early February 2025, our Assist. Prof. Dr. Pavel Kuchař delivered a thought-provoking webinar titled The Knowledge Gap in Economics. The session centered around a fundamental question: Does the general public truly lack understanding of economics? And if so, should economists rethink how they communicate with broader audiences?
The lecture, organized by the University of Helsinki, was inspired by an article co-authored by Pavel Kuchař and his colleague Erwin Dekker. In their work, the authors explore whether there can be meaningful continuity between expert perspectives on economics and the public's understanding. Can the layperson’s view of economics be different—and still valuable?
The article, titled The Knowledge Gap in Economics: What Does the Public Know about the Economy and What Do Economists Know about the Public?, offers insights into how academic economics can better connect with everyday life.
We extend our thanks to Dr. Kuchař for an inspiring lecture and to all participants for their thoughtful contributions!
